“I’ll pick Jenny,” said one of my classmates.
She was second to the last to be picked for teams.
“Ugh, I guess I’ll take you,” said the other team captain.
Thus, was my lot in High School, always picked last when it came to anything athletic. I never participated in sports during high school, unless you count being the girl’s basketball manager.
When I started my fitness journey, being an athlete was the furtherest thing from my mind. Athletes are pictured on Wheaties boxes; they are tough and confident, qualities I didn’t possess.
Until…
I made the choice to compete in my first triathlon.
“Remember today,” a voice boomed over the loudspeaker. “Today no matter how you finish you will be called a triathlete, because you worked hard, trained hard and fought hard.”
I took those words to heart and even though I only compete in sprint triathlons and my time is mediocre compared to “true” athletes, I still call myself a triathlete.
And from that moment everything changed.
The skinny girl who never thought she was good enough, who pushed her body to the breaking point time and again, was finally vindicated. I was able to call myself an athlete. It still feels awkward to say it, like it’s a title I don’t deserve.
But each day I’m reminded that I am an athlete because…
I fought my way back from an eating disorder.
I birthed two {very large} baby boys.
I trained and competed in two triathlons within two weeks.
and
I wake up at the crack of dawn to work and sweat.
It’s time to stop hiding behind baggy sweatshirts, and free my inner athlete.
I need to dress the part and be the Cardio Queen, and let the outside reflect what I’m feeling on the inside.
Strong.
Empowered.
Confident.
