We met twelve years ago today, in real life.
We had been “talking” via internet and phone for weeks, but today was the first date – Valentines Day.
I did everything wrong.
He picked me up at my house and we drove alone the thirty minutes to the next town. I could have been a Dateline Story, but I wasn’t.
Instead ours is a love story.
It’s not big grandiose gestures, with exotic weekends away or flowers everyday.
It’s little moments captured during the craziness of life. That’s OUR love story. When I married him, my visions of marriage were realistic. I knew there would be moments when our hearts and souls would be tested. That life would throw us curveballs and we’d have duck or catch them. But no matter what life throws at us, I know I’m not alone and so does he.
So, when we barely see each other during the week because of life’s curveballs, I know he’s still there for me because he empties the dishwasher and vacuums the house. Because he works a normal 8 – 5 job and comes home and works some more with his own business, so that our little family won’t have to eat macaroni every day.
He gives me hugs when I need comfort and nose doinks when I need a smile.
Our love has surpassed arguments, deaths, births, horrible jobs, OCD mamas and chip munching husbands. And through it all it’s little love moments that have kept our love afloat.
So, as I celebrate Valentine’s Day, the day of that first meeting and first date, I remember him and those little moments. Because it’s not copious amounts of roses or mushy cards that let me know I’m loved it’s those everyday little love moments.

What a sweet story! I think a big part of the reason so many marriages fail these days is because people look too far beyond the simple everyday comfort and just don’t realize that big love comes in small gestures. Happy Valentine’s Day/Anniversary!

I had to smile at the “nose doinks” because my hubby likes to do that too when I need a smile. I love how you so simply shared how it really is the simple moments that make love worth it and make it so great. 🙂
