My Perspective: Where did Sportsmanship Go?

“Here come the Hawkeyes!” booms the loudspeaker.

Mind numbing cheers come from the stands dotted with black and gold.

It’s gameday.

Time for some football.

From the moment the spiral pass slips through the receiver’s hands and hits the turf with a thud, the insults rain down upon him.

“Come on you need to catch that shit,” yelled a middle aged man dressed in black and gold.

“What is your f-ing problem,” screamed the lady behind me.

I was stunned by the shear hatred I saw in their eyes. The anger and rage at someone they didn’t even know, just over a simple football game.

Unfortunately, we’ve all seen this anger go too far. News reports of rage filled fans fighting in the stands, throwing bottles and yelling profanities at the opposing players seem to be a weekend occurrence.

Anyone who participates in a competitive sport is fodder for name calling and bashing. Just look at the comments about Gabby Douglas’ hair. Really? That’s someone’s daughter you are criticizing.

It’s scary how easily we can turn on one another.

How we forget these athletes are human.

In this case merely children, many not even old enough to enjoy a drink after the game.

When did the game get so serious?

This game isn’t a matter of life and death.

It’s entertainment.

It’s supposed to be fun.

It’s about finding something to be passionate about.

It’s about SPORTSMANSHIP.

“conduct (as fairness, respect for one’s opponent,
and graciousness in winning or losing) becoming
to one participating in a sport.”

Lately it seems Sportsmanship is a lost value, right next to chivalry and politeness.

So next Saturday, I’ll take it upon myself to educate those rage-filled fans in the stands. Because, when the going gets tough and we find ourselves on the losing side, it’s time to display the true meaning of sportsmanship by encouraging an athlete instead of discouraging them.

That’s what being a real fan is all about.
