I was once a writer.
I would write long flowery prose that would drip from my pen into the soft confines of my journal. Documenting each facet of my life the good, the bad and the crazy. Those were the college years, filled with tumultous emotions easy to put onto paper. Now, things have changed.
The prose has stopped.
Confined by the walls of a working woman and busy mom who barely has time to do her hair let alone find time to write in peace and quiet.
Over the years my writing has turned sterile or too casual leaving out intricate details. Like painting with only one color. My writing has turn white, shallow and meaningless. Either trying to inform in the most simple terms or a series of abreviations in a text.
In the working world, the slightest nuance of flowery prose immediately warranted a reprimand from my boss. “Just the facts” or “You’re too wordy.” And the prose dried up. Withered and brown like a rotting grape left on the vine.
Then I found the blog.
And the prose came back. The details grew vivid in my mind like a painter’s palette filled with all the colors of the rainbow. And the stories and tales started to flow.
Ironically, the pen still needs to meet the soft comfort of a notebook before the prose will flow, but once it does the transition to a clacking keyboard is seamless and true.
As you will see I don’t worry about punctuation, or grammar, or the way my paragraphs break. I just write without boundaries, letting the words flow and lead me where they would like to go.
I always re-read what I have written taking great care in making sure each word flows one into the other. Making sure my voice can still be heard and not the sterile emptiness from before.
With each post and each sentence in a notebook the writing becomes more alive and meaningful. I will stretch my wings and rise like a Phoenix from the flames. Reborn. Ready to share my stories and let the prose flow.
A writer reborn.
>What a lovely post. I am glad you found your blog, it is brilliant, and I love hearing what you have to say : ) xxx
>i'm glad you found a vibrant, multi-colored palette for your "voice" — i love your style of writing. it keeps me coming back 🙂 oh, and that you are from iowa 🙂
>Glad you are feeling more colorful in your writing. You are enjoyable to read!
This post so speaks to me. Like you, I have a job where being chatty isn't exactly welcomed. I love science and medicine but feel that it is the weed that chokes the flower of creativity, if you will.
You have inspired me to buy a pretty journal, which always invites me to write.
Blogging has been that same kind of rebirth for me. And I love it.
Your writing is beautiful and I am so happy to have found you this morning.
Happy SITS day!

Awww. Thanks and right back at ya! Have a great rest of the week.
I love this! I’ve always like simply the act of writing in a notebook, I wasn’t sure how writing on a keyboard was going to work but I can now do either, pen or clicks. =)
Stopping by from Sits!! =)

I think I’m getting used to the clicks…when I first started I couldn’t do anything without a notebook, but now that I’ve found my voice it becoming much easier.
I can’t write in a notebook. The words don’t come out fast enough but the thought that you need to makes me smile. Writing it so healing. I am glad you returned to it.

Thank you for your post. I’ve had those struggles, too. I once stopped writing for three years and started again after seeing Sister Act 2. Happy SITS day. I will be back.

I’m glad that you found a way or writing that fits with you for now. It’s hard to find the time sometimes. I used to write… boring, romantic stories back in my teen years, a little in my very early twenties. Not any more, but I miss it. I miss living in that fantasy world.

Blogging rules doesn’t it? It has opened so many doors for me, friendships, writing, confidence. Keep on doing what you do. AWESOME!!!
Yay for creativity!! I feel exactly the same way–it’s so important to have a creative outlet just for ourselves. Happy SITS!
I love that you revealed you still need to write with pen and paper first. I am currently working on my first novel and I tried starting it on a Microsoft Word but found my creativity just flowed better when I was writing with pen and paper. Thus I am writing my book completely in notebooks first and then I will type it up when I am finished. It might take longer but I think the end result will be better.
